Editorial policies and standards

Mission and coverage
The Shortlisted Media Ltd is an independent media organisation that inspires people to create a more just, compassionate and intelligent world through reporting, commentary, and reader engagement. Our independent journalism analysis societal problems through music and entertainment content and explores opportunities for structural change. Our stories often uncover economic, social and cultural justice intersections. Our commentaries address dominant current affairs and offer constructive criticism and alternative ways of thinking that can produce a more sensible world.

Our revenue comes from multiple sources including display, programmatic and native ads, sponsored posts and backlink placements. We are not affiliated with any political party or external organisation. As outlined in our information for advertisers page, ad placements, partners and sponsors do not interfere with our editorial judgment and independence. Our editorial strategy is insulated from our revenue sources by a firewall.

Editorial independence policy
In making editorial decisions, The Shortlisted Media Ltd is inspired by the standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News and retains full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organisation. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services or opinions. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorised distribution of editorial content.

Ethics policy
The Shortlisted Media Ltd maintains an in-house style guide, and its editorial policies follow the Society of Professional Journalists Code of Ethics. We seek and report the truth, we are honest and courageous in gathering, reporting, and interpreting information and we minimise harm by treating sources, subjects, colleagues, and members of the public as human beings deserving of respect. We act independently with an obligation to serve the public and avoid any conflicts of interest.

Verification and fact-checking standards
The factual parts and segments of our articles are verified and fact-checked. We make independent evaluations of difficult topics, we report on and analyse those topics using verifiable facts, and to clearly identify the sources of all information presented. Whenever possible, we provide direct links to original sources and data directly in a given article. We are committed to publishing accurate information across all of our platforms. We take many steps to ensure accuracy, including investigating claims with scepticism, challenging question assumptions and conventional wisdom, confirming information with current data and seeking to put together independently claims made by entities or sources. We verify third-party claims and information using original documents and primary sources whenever possible, and, whenever appropriate and possible, we make explicit the origin of information and data. We do not allow sources to review a story prior to publication, but we may share relevant quotes or data with a source to confirm accuracy. We may allow the use of pseudonyms in published journalism in the case of a clear and pressing need for anonymity, such as the legitimate concern for the safety of sources, or where personal privacy must be protected. The decision to use a veiled source is made solely at our discretion. We do not publish anonymous pieces, except in rare instances where the aforementioned standards for veiled sources have been met.

Corrections policy
We stand by the accuracy of our reporting and strive to quickly and transparently correct any errors. Please report possible errors to [email protected]

Reader Engagement and Feedback
We welcome feedback from our readers and sources regarding the information that we publish at [email protected]

Terms of use agreement

1. © Copyright disclaimer

1.1. the-shortlisted.co.uk is © copyrighted by its legitimate owner(s) and is protected under all applicable international, federal, state and local laws, with ALL rights reserved. No part of the site may be copied, or changed in any format, sold, or used in any way other than what is outlined by the owner under any circumstances without permission from the owner. the-shortlisted.co.uk, its marketing and content collateral and other apps, channels (including social media) and official external resources and all the other materials available on this website are the property of ours and/or our contributors, affiliates or licensors and are protected by copyright, trademark, and other international intellectual property laws. the-shortlisted.co.uk is provided solely for your personal noncommercial use: you may not use this site or the materials available on this site and the above-detailed channels and materials in a manner that constitutes any type of infringement of our rights or that has not been authorised by us.

1.2. Unless explicitly authorised in this text or previously agreed by us in writing, you are not allowed to copy, reproduce, modify, republish, upload, post, transmit, translate, sell, create derivative works, exploit, or distribute in any manner or medium (including by email and any other electronic means) any material from this website. You may, however, from time to time, download and/or print one copy of selected individual pages of the site for your personal, non-commercial use, provided that you keep intact all copyright and other proprietary notices.

1.3. Concerning the content, images, pictures and videos that are not under copywriting with us (i.e., we are not the recognised “authors” of such material) but that we are using under the “fair use” allowance foreseen by the Copyright Act 1976 (see 1.4. for details), we still strive to make all the reasonable efforts to trace and mention the original author, by writing the author/authors’ name/names with appropriate credits; when the caption “© to the owners” is present, this means we have made all the reasonable effort to trace and mention the original author but we could not find any. If, for any reason, the respective owners of such materials do not want to see their works published by us, they can send us an email and we will delete their works/names/credits from our website and collaterals, including social media. In any case, each piece of work’s copyright belongs to their respective owners, and we decline any intention of copyright and/or trademark infringement.

1.4. Concerning the use of copyrighted materials, it is necessary to point out that this website is for education purposes, and that the Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976 explains that allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research; hence, fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. There is never, an intention of infringing copyright when we use copyrighted materials, and, as explained in 1.3., we strive to trace and mention the original authors; since we are operating under the “fair use” allowance being this an educational, reporting and criticism website, we are not liable to incur in any legal actions undertaken by the copyright owners – however, again, if the copyright owners do not want to see their works published here (which would only be for educational purposes and always, when possible, credited to the copyright owners), they are required to let us know in writing and we will delete their works immediately.

1.5. This is a provisional, non-inclusive directory of the work (including content, media, social media posts, audio, video, images and any other content format) published in our website for which we haven’t been able to trace and mention the correct copyright owners:

1.5.o Occasionally, we have reproduced CD covers, film posters and leaflets for illustrative purposes only. We decline all responsibility for any possible copyright or trademark breach with regard to that.
